What’s it like to run a company?  How about a surgical unit or an emergency room?  Or a high powered law firm?

It’s stressful, time consuming and exhausting – mentally and physically.

It can also be lonely.

For professionals in high stress jobs – lots of lives depend on their success – including their families.

What can all the stress lead to?

A strong desire to escape the incessant pressures.

That’s not all, according to current psychiatric research, both addicts and high level professionals tend to have addictive personalities. They both seek risks and excitement and they both tend to have obsessive personality traits – traits that make them good at what they do.

Is it any wonder that drug and alcohol addiction are not uncommon among those holding senior professional positions?

Among medical professionals alone it’s estimated that 10% abuse drugs and/or alcohol.  The same is believed to be true for business executives, lawyers and professional pilots.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse …“addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences.”

But drug abuse is more common among working class and lower income groups – right?

The American Journal of Preventive Medicine, recently found that people with high incomes living in neighborhoods with unbalanced income levels had the highest prevalence of alcohol and marijuana consumption of all groups.

So apparently wealth doesn’t protect people from substance abuse.

A further complicating factor?

Finding treatment options that accommodate the very complicated lives professionals lead can often be extremely difficult.

Aware Recovery Care has actually developed an addiction treatment model in collaboration with researchers at Yale that is often ideal for professionals struggling with addiction.  Aware’s  Executive and Professionals Track utilizes this innovative model and follows all treatment guidelines for licensed professionals including Physicians, Nurses, Pilots, Lawyers, C-level  Executives and more.
